Lloyd”s of London braced for claims after Madoff meltdown makes.
Spielberg”s colleague Jeffrey Katzenberg, chief executive of Dream-Works Animation, is believed to have had millions of dollars of his personal wealth invested with Madoff.

Full details of the exact losses are yet to emerge. Hedge funds and banks have so far admitted to having around ?16billion with Madoff - only half of the total that is reckoned to have been lost.

Some of the biggest casualties are Swiss private banks, which have taken hits amounting to about ?2.5billion. Spanish bank Santander had ?2.1billion of client money with Madoff.

HSBC has admitted to lending about ?600million to funds who wanted to use debt to gear up their positions with Madoff.

HSBC is expected to write-off its exposure in its entirety - but banking analysts in London were yesterday playing down suggestions that the loss will push HSBC into issuing new shares to bolster its capital position.more

"Millions" shares wealth of goodwill

"Millions" shares wealth of goodwill.
With Danny Boyle back in the entertainment news and Oscar buzz for his innovative ‘Slumdog Millionaires,’ people are trying to remember where they”ve heard his name before.

How about ‘Trainspotting,’ and that indelible scene of heroin addicts emerging from one of the filthiest toilets imaginable? Or think of ‘28 Days Later,’ one of the most viscerally disturbing horror films of the past 20 years, with its furious lab monkeys and speed-freak zombies?

But the British writer and director has a sweeter side. A few years ago he made a wonderful family movie called ‘Millions.’

For the few adults lucky enough to have seen it, it was, for many of them, one of their favorite movies of 2005. For kids who haven”t come across it yet, ‘Millions’ is the kind of movie families should watch together on a lazy Thanksgiving afternoon, or a post-Thanksgiving Friday when the cousins are starting to get on each others” nerves.more

china: 30 years after reform, farmers once again hope for change

china: 30 years after reform, farmers once again hope for change.
Now these pioneers, their hair greying, are hoping for a new revolution to once again transform their small community and close a yawning wealth gap with the cities.
Some official histories argue that China’s market reforms began right there in Xiaogang, in Anhui Province, when the 18, exasperated by relentless poverty, agreed to abandon their commune, or rural collective.
In its place they implemented a ‘household responsibility system’ that essentially returned land to the farmers and allowed them to freely sell any produce they harvested beyond state-set quotas.
Grain production doubled in Xiaogang within a year and after approval from the state, farmers nationwide began abandoning the communes and flocking to free markets.
‘It was a fact that the commune system did not work’, said Yan Hongchang, 60, the leader of Xiaogang ‘s reform drive in 1978.more

Check out my auto bailout plan

Check out my auto bailout plan.
However, there is a problem with transferring billions of dollars of American taxpayer wealth to private corporations. It”s illegal and unconstitutional. It is the very antithesis of American ideals. It is stealing.

Furthermore, it won”t work. It will only lead to more bailouts and more theft in the future – and the end of free enterprise as we know it in America.

So, I have developed my own bailout plan. It doesn”t transfer any wealth, directly or indirectly, to the three U.S. automakers. It doesn”t break either the letter or spirit of the law. And, I guarantee it will work. It will save the American auto industry.

Are you ready for the Farah bailout plan?

Instead of taking billions of dollars from the American people and transferring it to the Detroit automakers, we offer the American people a good deal.more

Fighting Over What Lies Beneath the Desert Nomads Battle Niger for.
It is a new front of an old war to control the vast wealth locked beneath African soil.

Niger”s northern desert caps one of the world”s largest deposits of uranium, and demand for it has surged as global warming has increased interest in nuclear power. Growing economies like China and India are scouring the globe for the crumbly ore known as yellowcake. A French mining company is building the world”s largest uranium mine in northern Niger, and a Chinese state company is building another mine nearby.

Uranium could infuse Niger with enough cash to catapult it out of the kind of poverty that causes one in five children here to die before their fifth birthday.

Or it could end in a calamitous war that leaves Niger more destitute than ever. Mineral wealth has fueled conflict across Africa for decades, a series of bloody, smash-and-grab rebellions that shattered nations.more
